Guanacaste Airport Continues to Grow Alongside Costa Rica’s Tourism Boom
As tourism, luxury travel, and real estate investment continue to surge in Costa Rica’s Pacific Northwest, Liberia International Airport is moving forward with a major modernization and expansion program designed to enhance the visitor experience and support future growth.
Known officially as Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, Liberia International Airport serves as the primary gateway to Guanacaste’s world-famous beaches, luxury resorts, residential communities, and national parks. With international arrivals reaching record levels, airport officials have announced a series of infrastructure improvements that will further strengthen the region’s position as one of Latin America’s most desirable travel destinations.
The expansion project represents an investment of approximately $6 million and is scheduled to take place between the third quarter of 2026 and the first half of 2027.
New VIP Lounge Designed Around the Spirit of Guanacaste
One of the most anticipated additions is a brand-new VIP Lounge covering 354 square meters.
Designed to showcase the unique culture, landscapes, and heritage of Guanacaste, the lounge will embrace a "sense of place" concept that reflects the province's open plains, natural beauty, and coastal lifestyle. The upgraded facility will provide travelers with enhanced comfort, premium services, and an elevated airport experience before departure.
The addition reflects the growing demand from international visitors seeking higher-end travel experiences while visiting Costa Rica.
Private Aviation Terminal Supports Luxury Tourism Growth
A major component of the expansion is the development of a new General and Business Aviation Terminal (GBAT), specifically designed to accommodate private and executive aircraft.
The new facility will cater to high-net-worth travelers, business executives, luxury resort guests, and investors increasingly choosing Guanacaste as a destination for both leisure and business.
The terminal will be operated by Signature Aviation, the world's largest network of private aviation terminals. Planned amenities include:
- Private VIP lounge
- Executive conference facilities
- Direct aircraft apron access
- Electric vehicle charging stations
- Premium finishes featuring locally sourced materials
The addition highlights Guanacaste's growing reputation as a destination for luxury tourism, international business, and high-end real estate investment.
Expanded Parking and Improved Passenger Access
To accommodate rising passenger numbers, the airport will also significantly improve parking facilities.
Parking Lot 4 will undergo a complete renovation and expansion, adding capacity for approximately:
- 160 passenger vehicles
- 70 motorcycles
The upgraded parking area will feature modern access control systems and improved traffic management.
A covered pedestrian walkway will connect the eastern parking area directly to the terminal, providing greater convenience and protection from Guanacaste's tropical weather, particularly during the rainy season.
Airport officials will also relocate the public transportation terminal to improve traffic circulation and simplify access for travelers, employees, and public transit users.
Terminal Modernization Improves Efficiency and Comfort
Several operational upgrades will take place inside the terminal itself.
Planned improvements include:
- New escalators and elevators
- Modernized employee security checkpoints
- Expanded baggage claim facilities
- Enhanced airport security systems
- Upgraded power infrastructure
One of the most important improvements will be a 25% increase in backup power capacity through the installation of a new generator and upgrades to existing systems, ensuring greater reliability during peak travel periods.
Larger Boarding Areas to Handle Future Growth
As passenger traffic continues to rise, airport officials are also expanding Gate 5.
The project will add approximately 332 square meters of additional boarding space, improving passenger comfort and operational efficiency during high-season travel periods.
The expansion will help the airport manage increasing visitor volumes while maintaining service standards expected by international travelers.
Why Liberia International Airport Matters to Guanacaste
Liberia International Airport has become one of Costa Rica's most important transportation hubs.
Unlike travelers arriving through San José, visitors landing in Liberia enjoy quick access to many of the country's most desirable destinations, including:
- Playas del Coco
- Playa Hermosa
- Playa Panama
- Peninsula Papagayo
- Tamarindo
- Flamingo
- Las Catalinas
- Rincon de la Vieja National Park
For many visitors, the airport is less than 30 minutes from their final destination, making Guanacaste one of the most accessible beach regions in Central America.
What This Means for Costa Rica Real Estate and Tourism
The continued investment in Liberia International Airport is another strong indicator of Guanacaste's long-term growth trajectory.
Combined with major developments such as the Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis Papagayo, expanded luxury resort offerings, and the proposed Playas del Coco Marina, the airport improvements further strengthen the region's appeal to international buyers, investors, retirees, and vacation homeowners.
Improved airport infrastructure creates easier access, supports tourism growth, increases property demand, and enhances the overall visitor experience—factors that continue to drive investment throughout the Papagayo Region.
As Guanacaste evolves into one of Costa Rica's premier luxury tourism and residential markets, Liberia International Airport remains at the center of that growth, providing the connectivity needed to support the region's expanding global profile.
